Mass Balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet in the Early 21st Century

چکیده
Mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) is an important contributor to global sea level rise. To examine recent ice loss, we estimated mass budget of AIS 2000 2020 using multiple velocity datasets, state-of-the-art thickness and extended surface balance (SMB) records. The lost at average rate −89 ± 99 Gt/yr over study period. East (EAIS) showed a slightly positive balance, while West (WAIS) experienced significant acceleration in loss. discharge increased 1792 47 1940 37 2017–2020, with increase WAIS being three four times higher than that EAIS. Moreover, for 2017–2020 was −99 93 Gt/yr, more negative early 21st Century. During this period, decreased Indian Ocean sector, contrast its rapid 2013–2017. However, Amundsen Sea sector still greatly 2013–2017 2017–2020. Overall, our results are agreement estimates based on gravimetry altimetry. Our assessments method (input-output method) will contribute understanding dynamic processes provide insights into stability AIS.

Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.
The Antarctic contribution to sea-level rise has long been uncertain. While regional variability in ice dynamics has been revealed, a picture of mass changes throughout the continental ice sheet is lacking. Here, we use satellite radar altimetry to measure the elevation change of 72% of the grounded ice sheet during the period 1992-2003. Depending on the density of the snow giving rise to the o...

The concept that the Antarctic ice sheet changes with eternal slowness has been challenged by recent observations from satellites. Pronounced regional warming in the Antarctic Peninsula triggered ice shelf collapse, which led to a 10-fold increase in glacier flow and rapid ice sheet retreat. This chain of events illustrated the vulnerability of ice shelves to climate warming and their buffering...

Outputs from the regional climate model Modèle Atmosphérique Régionale at a spatial resolution of 25 km are used to study 21st century projected surface mass balance (SMB) over six major drainage basins of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). The regional model is forced with the outputs of three different Earth System Models (CanESM2, NorESM1 and MIROC5) obtained when considering two greenhouse gas...

We present a reference, comprehensive, high-resolution, digital mosaic of ice motion in Antarctica assembled from multiple satellite interferometric synthetic-aperture radar data acquired during the International Polar Year 2007 to 2009. The data reveal widespread, patterned, enhanced flow with tributary glaciers reaching hundreds to thousands of kilometers inland over the entire continent. Thi...
